Abby Burton is an attorney and small business owner who brings both legal experience and a business owner’s perspective to her practice. As the co-owner and operator of a Philadelphia fitness business, Abby understands firsthand the challenges that come with running and growing a small business—from managing contracts and vendor relationships to navigating employment issues, partnerships, unexpected disputes, and the countless decisions that business owners make every day. That experience shapes the way she practices law: with an emphasis on practical advice, clear communication, and solutions that make sense not just legally, but for the business as a whole.

Abby has represented businesses and individuals through every stage of civil litigation in state and federal court. She has handled preliminary injunction proceedings, class certification hearings, trials, and appeals, and has experience taking depositions, managing discovery, examining witnesses at trial, and briefing and arguing dispositive motions and appeals. Her litigation experience spans a wide range of matters, including breach of contract and business disputes, intellectual property, employment law, construction and contractor disputes, constitutional law, products liability, mass torts, and education law.

Before founding Burton Legal, Abby practiced civil litigation at a Philadelphia trial boutique, where she represented clients in complex disputes at both the trial and appellate levels. From 2021 to 2023, she served as a term staff attorney with the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, where she analyzed appeals and made recommendations to the Court in matters involving habeas corpus, immigration, civil rights, constitutional law, appellate jurisdiction, and federal civil and criminal procedure.

Abby began her legal career as a litigation associate in the Washington, D.C. office of a large multinational law firm. There, she worked on civil and administrative litigation, anti-corruption and anti-money laundering matters, government enforcement matters, and internal investigations involving alleged violations of federal law. Throughout her career, Abby has also devoted significant time to pro bono representation, particularly on behalf of incarcerated individuals in appellate and civil rights matters.

Abby graduated magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019. At Georgetown, she served on the Senior Board of The Georgetown Law Journal, co-taught and mentored first-year Legal Practice students as a Law Fellow, and served on the law school’s student-faculty admissions committee. She graduated cum laude from the University of Maryland, College Park, with a degree in Multiplatform Journalism in 2016.

Abby is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. She is also admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Outside of her legal practice, Abby co-owns and operates Evolve Fitness PHL, a group fitness business in Philadelphia. Her role includes business operations, events, partnerships, staffing, marketing, and community development. Being on both sides of the attorney-client relationship—as a lawyer advising businesses and as an owner responsible for running one—gives Abby a practical understanding of what small business clients need from their counsel: accessible advice, thoughtful risk assessment, and a focus on solving problems without losing sight of the bigger picture.
